The Battle of the Bands is the newest competition at the
Five
County Fair, designed to encourage and showcase local songwriters and
musical performers. This competition is open to all local bands and
solo musicians who perform their own, orginal songs.
As
this is only our third Battle of the Bands competition, we're still
learning what works (and what doesn't). As a result, the information
here is subject to change up to the last minute. You should check back
here occasionally for any updates.

Prizes:
The grand prize will again include a paid gig at
Mulligans in Farmville, interviews on WFLO and WXJK, and possible
airplay on those stations (if winners' material fits the relevant
formats). Other prizes include cash, free setups for the
winning
band's lead guitar and bass guitar from Axis Music, and gift
certificates from
Buffalo Creek Guitar Company and Carrington's Music.
Judging:
Winners will be selected by a panel of judges based on
technical performance, stage presence and professionalism, and audience
reaction. Review the Judging
Guidelines
if you wish to see the instructions given to the
judges. Given that audience reaction is part of the total
score,
entrants are encouraged to urge their friends to attend the show and
make some noise!
Entry:
To enter,
complete and submit the entry
form, and bring your entry fee with you on the night of the
contest. You should also print and fill out the copyright agreement
and bring it with you on the night of the contest. If you would like to
print out a copy of the official rules select
this link.
OFFICIAL
RULES:
- Entrants may be solo acts or
multiple-piece bands. The performers in your act must reside or attend
a school in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Local acts will be given
preference in cases where we receive too many entries for the time
available.
- Each entrant
will perform one or more songs in a single 15 minute set. There will be
automatic point deductions for performances which last less than 10
minutes and which exceed 15 minutes.
- Entrants must perform original material
only:
The songwriter(s) must be listed as a member of your act even if they
aren't involved in the actual performance. All entrants must confirm
that they own all rights to the material being performed. Acts which
use "sampling" of other artists' material must prove that they have
obtained the applicable rights for each sample.
- Entry fees are based on the number of members of your
act and
are listed below. As mentioned above, in cases where the songwriter
doesn't actually perform in the act, (s)he must be listed as a member
of the band and present on the night of the performance.
- 1-2
members: $10
- 3-4 members: $20
- 5+
members: $30
- No
profanity or obscenity. The general guideline is that
your act is allowable if it is suitable for broadcast radio and/or
television. Violation of this rule will result in point deductions and,
if the judges unanamously declare an act to be obscene, you will be
immediately disqualified. We realize that this bit of censorship may
cramp some styles/genres, but please understand that the presence of
young children at the fair is unavoidable.
- Entrants must grant the Five County Fair Association
a
perpetual, nonexclusive right to use the entrants' name, likeness, and
to copy and/or use any photographs, audio and/or video recordings made
for or during the performance for the purposes of promoting the Five
County Fair, the Battle of the Bands, and/or you. In return, entrants
will be granted a perpetual, nonexclusive right to copy and use any
photographs, audio, and/or video recordings made of that entrant by the
event organizers for or during the performance for any purpose.
GENERAL INFORMATION
- The
Five County Fair will provide any necessary P.A. equipment
- A
staffed sales table will be available if your band has any CD's or
other swag to sell. The fee for this service is 10% of your sales.
- Members of your band, of course, get free admission
to the
Five County Fair on the night of the competition.
