These jersey colors bring forward the Sonoran desert sand from the D-backs' brand and have “Serpientes” winding across the chest. Serpientes, the Spanish translation of Snakes, was used to pay tribute to the Hispanic Culture so prominent in Arizona.

There were issues with trying to come up with a snake mascot, because well, snakes don't have legs and you can't very well have a mascot moving around the ballpark with no legs.

The D-backs – Short version of "Diamondbacks". The Snakes – Reference to diamondback rattlesnakes. The Rattlesnakes – Long version of the previous. The Diamondback Rattlesnakes – Longer version, referencing the full name of rattlesnake species.

Since their debut, the Diamondbacks have won two Wild Card Series, five NL West division titles, two NL pennants, and the 2001 World Series. They later became the fastest expansion franchise in baseball history to win a World Series.

The logo incorporates a rattlesnake to symbolize the Arizona Diamondbacks and a mountain to symbolize the Colorado Rockies. The logo also emphasizes the scenic mountain ranges that surround Salt River Fields at Talking Stick and illustrates the role of the rattlesnake in southwestern Native American legends.

First prize was a pair of lifetime season tickets awarded to the person who submitted the winning entry. The winning choice was "Diamondbacks", after the Western diamondback, a rattlesnake native to the region known for injecting a large amount of venom when it strikes.
