He realised that something was amiss when he noticed that the parent birds ceased coming to the nestbox, and when he took a look inside he discovered eight dead nestings and one unhatched egg. What was the reason for their demise? The answer, I think, lies in the date. The dead birds were found on June 9 which I followed a period of heavy rain, conditions that can be disastrous for young tit*. The problem is that insects and small caterpillars, so vital for the welfare of these nestlings, can be washed out of the trees thereby leading to fruitless searches for. food by the parent birds.

This same reader poses another problem about a beech tree of his acquaintance which always comes into leaf by degrees, as it were. The leaves appear on one side of the tree followed by those in the middle and finally by those on the other side. This happens without fail every year, my reader tells me, and he wonders why. feel sure this must have something to do with the roots some of which would appear to be working more efficiently than others. doubt if it has anything to do with the position of the tree resulting in one side being more exposed to the wind than the other.
This can certainly hasten or retard leaf fall, but I would be surprised if it would influence leaf growth. I have a malus tree in my garden which for some years reacted in a similar way to my reader's beech, and put the trouble down to a gas leak that was discovered below ground where the gas pipes came close to the roots on one side.
