A week ago, Brooke Henderson lifted the second major trophy of her career, winning the Amundi Evian Championship for her first major title since 2016. That six-year stretch was certainly longer than she had hoped, and to finally get rid of the proverbial monkey. coming back with the win was a big relief for the 24-year-old Canadian superstar.
“It was definitely worth the wait. Winning my first major championship, it was really life changing, just the attention I got from the media and the fans and everything,” Henderson said. “But then for getting second, yes, that’s a box you can check off, and it just gives you a bit more confidence that you’re playing and that you can compete on the biggest stages.”
After a week off to savor and rest from the major adrenaline rush, Henderson now finds herself back on the big stage, teeing off at the AIG Women’s Open. Like most attendees, Henderson saw Muirfield for the first time on Monday and it quickly became a high note in his on-course repertoire. “I think those are maybe my favorite ties I’ve ever played,” she said. “It will certainly be a great test, very difficult, especially if it’s as windy as it is now. I think it’s a nice view to walk around and it’s a beautiful golf course.”
This is Henderson’s eighth appearance at the AIG Women’s Open and although she has only missed the cut once, she has yet to finish in the top 10. Her best result came in 2018 at the ties at Royal Lytham and St Annes, where she finished tied for 11th. While she admits links golf is a different challenge for her game, Henderson knows this week at Muirfield will be a worthy test, not to mention a big step forward for the women’s game.
“Links golf is very different and certainly a big challenge for me, coming from courses that had nothing like it growing up. So it’s a big change,” said Henderson, who will play his first two rounds alongside of Atthaya Thitikul and Lexi Thompson.” But every year I feel like I’m getting a little more comfortable with the different shots and the different style of play that you have to use. It’s a great time to be part of women’s golf and to be here, a major championship on this amazing golf course that we’ve never been able to play before, only the men. It really means a lot, and I’m just thrilled about this opportunity.
