Cases of viruses close the school of Reno; the hospital restricts visitors

RENO, Nevada (AP) – A private Catholic school in Reno for kindergarten to eighth graders is temporarily shutting down due to numerous cases of COVID-19.

Our Lady of the Snows Catholic School principal Stim Feutsch said the shutdown would last until at least September 27, as several college kids were released with COVID-19 and an entire classroom was in quarantine , reported the Reno Gazette Journal.

The Nevada Hospital Association on Wednesday urged residents to stay out of emergency rooms except in real emergencies, particularly in northern Nevada where a resurgence of COVID-19 cases continues at a pace twice as high as in the Las Vegas area.

Washoe County Health District Officer Kevin Dick said the 30-day average number of new cases per 100,000 population had quintupled in the Reno-Sparks area in the past six weeks, from 354 at 1,621 now.

Tony Slonim, president and CEO of Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno, said there are currently no plans to reopen the alternative care site which had been set up in a parking lot to treat a wave of patients l last fall.

But Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center will begin restricting visits from Thursday as an increase in COVID-19 patients tests its hospital capacity.
