On November 11, Veterans Day, we honored and celebrated Veterans, as we do every year. But this year, Nevada County also hosted its first-ever Military Appreciation Week from November 6-14, during which participating companies offered discounts and other incentives to the military community. Some discounts are ongoing and continue throughout the year. I’m excited to see District 4 businesses on the list including Honey & Cream, Penn Valley Northridge, All About Wells, the Seventh-day Adventist Church, Penn Valley Veterinary Associates, Plaza Tire and Auto Service, and Java Dream. Find the list of all participating businesses and register your own business to participate here.

Ahead of Military Appreciation Week, the county hosted a Military Appreciation Ceremony on October 26 at Grass Valley Veterans Hall. Colonel Heather Fox, the commander of Beale Air Force Base, was the keynote speaker. Other speakers included representatives from every branch of the military, as well as members of the Gold Star family (meaning they lost a family member who made the ultimate sacrifice during military service). Steve Rose, county human resources director and military veteran himself, described the ceremony as an opportunity to “recognize and provide information and stories so that people who are not in the military can understand what means “call of duty.” “Here is a video clip from the event.
