LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – A candle-making hobby turns into a big business for a Las Vegas woman who just opened a store. The Simply Pleasing Candle Company is located on the west side on Rainbow Boulevard near Charleston. It is the first black-owned candle company in the valley.
“Simply Pleasing Candle Company is the definition of how small purchases can go a long way.
“I thought it would be like a family type thing; I didn’t think the rest of the world would take it, but I’m so thankful that I did, said MaKayla Shorts, owner of Simply Pleasing Candle Company.
Shorts has always loved candles, but the idea of owning his own candle business came to him in a dream in September.
“It was ‘Candles by MaKayla’, and it was my dream. It was on someone’s shelf and I had no idea it would be mine, ”she said.
Shorts got to work on her dream and started her online business in November, but the volume of orders quickly overtook her house, leading her to open a physical store on Rainbow Blvd.
“The master bedroom looked like this only worse with IKEA shelves all over the room,” Shorts said.
She intends to expand.
And this week, Shorts found out that she was the first owner of a black-owned candle store in town!
Shorts says the pandemic has made him realize how quickly regular income can be withdrawn. She said she was grateful to have her candle business to help her family.
Short has some tips for other entrepreneurs looking to try their luck like she has.
“I didn’t know anyone who personally ran a business I could ask questions; so I would say just do it, ”Shorts said.
For those of you who want to learn how to make candles, Shorts says she will be hosting a class in July on how to make it.
