Harry Reid’s Legacy: Protecting and Preserving Nevada’s Wilderness

Christensen, who has known Reid since the 90s, says his lasting legacy will be visible through the lands and waters he helped protect. Reid changed the way the world and the nation viewed his home country, Christensen said.

Nevada “was seen as a wasteland for bombings and atomic testing and, you know, establishing a vast network of Amex missiles – which, you know, thankfully never saw the day,” he said. “He (Reid) changed that image, starting with Great Basin National Park and then protecting the wilderness and protecting the rivers and lakes.”

Christensen’s latest documentary work, “Earth Focus: The New West and the Politics of the Environment,” delves deeper into the politician who grew up in an Old West mining town, saw the possibility of an emerging New West in the Nevada and followed this change in power.

The 85-minute documentary shines a light on the struggles and pushes Reid to preserve and protect the lands of Nevada.

“Harry Reid’s passing has left a great void, not just in Nevada, but throughout the American West and in our country,” Christensen said. “He has shown in his career that there is a pragmatic environmental path in politics, that negotiation and compromise can find a solution.”
