Reno Ferri as coach of Syracuse Tight Ends (Report)

Syracuse fails to keep tight ends coach Reno Ferri, Syracuse.com’s report says Nate vison. He is the second staff member to be laid off, joining defensive line coach Vince Reynolds.

Coaching moves suggest Dino Babers is functioning as if he will be back for the 2022 season. There is no reason to fire position coaches if you don’t return. No official announcement has been made by Syracuse Athletics regarding the departures of Reynolds or Ferri or the status of Babers.

Reynolds coached in Syracuse for six seasons, spending time with tight ends and slot receivers. He was tasked with recruiting Washington DC, Maryland and Virginia for the Orange.

Since Syracuse hired Sterlin Gilbert as the offensive coordinator, the tight position has disappeared as part of the passing game. Luke Benson led the tight ends in catches during the 2021 season. He only tallied five receptions for 22 yards. Benson and former starting winger Aaron Hackett combined 16 catches for 126 yards during the 2020 season.

With Reynolds leaving, the tight end position could be one that sees players leave through the transfer portal, depending on who is hired as a replacement and how fast that is done. The portal could also be a place where Syracuse is looking to add an experienced blocking tight end.

Syracuse concluded the 2021 season on Saturday in a home game against Pittsburgh. Orange lost 31-14 to end the year 5-7. Syracuse missed a bowl game for the third straight season.
